Western Hills Viaduct This CMAR project for the City of Cincinnati replaces the existing Western Hills Viaduct, an important link between the West Side and Downtown/Uptown. This project is over one of the most active railyards in the country, and will construct a new Extradosed Bridge over the Queensgate Railyard, as well as demolish the existing aging structure. > Projects > Western Hills Viaduct PROJECT DETAILS A new extradosed bridge, approximately 2300’ long will be constructed over the CSX Queensgate Railyard. This work is expected to begin in 2025 and will last through 2030. The existing viaduct will remain in place for through traffic until the new bridge is finished, after which a complex demolition plan over the railroad will begin. Overall completion for the project is currently expected in 2030. It is a major transportation link that carries more than 55,000 vehicles a day over the Mill Creek Valley and a large, active railroad yard. Originally built in the early 1930s, the viaduct is reaching the end of its useful life. The City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County are leading a joint effort to replace the 90-year-old viaduct with a new “extradosed” bridge immediately to the south of the current viaduct. With a project of this complexity, there are ample options for career advancement, learning, and experience.
